Periodontology - Treatment of Gum Diseases

The periodontal diseases are inflammatory diseases that occur in the gums and tissues supporting the teeth.

When we cannot provide the desired level of oral hygiene, the reaction of the body to the infection caused by the increasing number of bacteria in our oral environment is called gingivitis. Unfortunately, the majority of our society has this inflammatory condition.

Contrary to the healthy gingival appearance, the gum in dark red may manifest itself while brushing our teeth or by spontaneous bleeding and sometimes acute pains.

What is gum disease?

It is an inflammatory disease that affects the gums and the tissues to which the teeth are attached and supported. When adhering to periodic dentist checks, it is recognized by the dentist in the early period and is easily treated.

However, in case of delay, it is the major cause of the tooth loss, but studies performed in recent years have shown that it also increases the severity of some systemic diseases.

What is gingivitis?

The gingivitis or gum inflammation is generally the earliest period of the gum disease and the inflammation is limited to the gingivitis. In this process, the gums have lost their tight, form, pink and healthy appearance; on the contrary, it is red, edematous and bleeding conditions.

If it is left untreated, it prepares the basis for more serious periodontal diseases in later stages. The gum inflammation can easily be overcome with the dental calculus cleaning, plaque cleaning, and good oral hygiene. It is easy to treat, but success can only be achieved in collaboration with the dentist and patient.

What is periodontitis?

The periodontitis is an advanced form of the periodontal diseases and the supportive tissues supporting the teeth have been lost to some extent. An area called “pocket” is formed between the tooth and gingiva and the disease progresses more easily and destruction of the supporting bone occurs as a result of this pocket. In conclusion, the teeth begin to loose and can be lost when they are left untreated.

What is periodontal curettage?

As the periodontal disease progresses to the deep tissues, it is the process of cleaning by scraping inside of this pocket and eliminating the bacteria, tissue residues and dental stones in “pocket” that we mentioned above.

What is flap operation?

In cases where the periodontal disease progresses much deeper, the treatment options that we mentioned previously may be insufficient. With the flap operation, the gingival tissue is surgically removed and the area is cleaned by seeing it directly.

This surgical procedure is performed under local anesthesia without pain. Bacteria, inflammatory tissues, residues, and dental stones are removed with the removed gum and closed by suturing.

Is suture made as a result of the periodontal surgery?

As a result of the periodontal surgical treatments, the sutures are made many times in order to provide faster and better recovery of the operation area and these sutures are taken after 1 week.

Is control required after the periodontal treatments?

The periodontal treatments are very valuable treatments for the oral and dental health. For this reason, you should absolutely go to the checks at the intervals that your dentist deems appropriate. Otherwise, your old gingival diseases may relapse again without you notice them and they can sneak forward without you realize them.
